So you’ve decided to attend a MarBecca Workshop, but don’t know which one to take first. You’ve talked to other people who have attended and asked their opinions, which is a good place to start, but you’ve most likely gotten differing input. It can be confusing.

Interestingly, each workshop is unique unto itself because each workshop is a different discipline completely. The only commonality between them, aside from being a workshop, is the use of a microphone and your voice. But how you use the microphone and your voice is different in each and demands a different technique and approach to the craft. As a result, the order in which you attend a workshop doesn’t really matter. In fact, the mistake you’ll want to avoid is expecting or bringing one skill set from one workshop to another, which confuses and dilutes the discipline.

In other words, you don’t want to “announce” a Love Story. You don’t want to “act” when you’re a Master of Ceremonies. To tell a compelling Love Story, you must be able to use acting and storytelling techniques, which is opposite the skills needed to be an Announcer or Master of Ceremonies.

So, which workshop should you take first? I think the best place to start is in the Master of Ceremonies workshop. It’s a great introduction to the workshop environment and isn’t as demanding as the other disciplines. Also, it’s a craft that most are familiar with, even in the most rudimentary way, and can use immediately upon exiting the workshop.
