As workshop providers, we get asked this question a lot. Sometimes out of curiosity. Sometimes out of fear. Well, mostly out of fear. What kind of fear? Fear of the unknown. Fear of embarrassment. Fear of failure.

We find that last item to be ironic. Because “failure” is the goal — initially. Not unlike going to the gym to lift weights, growth happens with failure. In lifting weights, the muscle tissue doesn’t break down until the last few repetitions when the lifter reaches “failure.” When the muscle breaks down, it then grows back stronger. This is exactly the process in a workshop. Any time you strive to reach beyond your current limits, growth happens.

Maui MarBecca MC Workshop

At MarBecca Workshops, we always foster a sense of community and mutual support. This camaraderie belays most embarrassment. Participants know from the beginning that their goal is to “fail.” They are told to abandon their ego — that part they use to protect themselves from embarrassment and prevents them from performing beyond that which they already do. They need to take the risk; to fail; to make mistakes in order to grow beyond their current capabilities. That’s the point. That’s the purpose of a workshop.
